Day 1 – Friday, October 5 Prague
Arrival in Prague: Arrive at Prague International Airport and transfer on your own to the hotel. This afternoon our group will meet in the hotel lobby for a brief orientation, followed by a guided walk to Old Town Square. View the famous Astronomical Clock and Prague’s Art Nouveau architecture around you. After, enjoy Kabbalat Shabbat services at a local synagogue, followed by a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. (D)
Day 2 – Saturday, October 6 Prague
Memory & Continuity: This morning we will be visiting Terezin, a town that was turned into a “model” ghetto and concentration camp, hiding from the world the true nature of its purpose. We will visit the so-called Hidden Synagogue, the Creamatorium and the Historical Museum and the Art Exhibits. Once returning to Prague, we will walk across the historical Charles Bridge, crossing the Vltava River that was once the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city’s Old Town and adjacent areas. Stroll across the bridge, decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues. The remainder of the day and evening is left free so that you will have the chance to explore Prague on your own. (B, L)
Day 3 – Sunday, October 7 Prague
The Glory of Jewish Prague: Today we’ll take a guided visit through Jewish Prague including the Old Ghetto, several synagogues, otherwise known as the Jewish Museum and the Jewish Cemetery. Some of the included highlights are:
- The Altneu Shul, the longest continually used synagogue in Europe and site of the first use of the Magen David.
- The Pincus Synagogue, a memorial to the Jews of Prague who died in the Holocaust.
- The Maisel Synagogue, named after a Jewish mayor of Prague, which exemplifies the Golden Age of Jewish Prague.
- The Old Cemetery, with the graves of such Jewish luminaries as Judah Loew, the Maharal, and Mordechai Maisels and the ceremonial hall with the well-known Hevra Kadisha paintings.
- The Spanish Synagogue built in 1868 on the site of the oldest Prague Jewish house of prayer (“the Old Shul”) and designed in a Moorish style by Vojtěch Ignátz Ullmann.
This afternoon, we will offer free time in the Old Town. Some of the things you may want to explore are a visit to Prague Castle, biking or a boat ride along the Vltava River, visit museums and art galleries including the Franz Kafka Museum, grab lunch and check out some authentic crafts. The evening is yours to eat dinner with some new friends and take in the beauty of Prague. (B)
Day 4 – Monday, October 8 Prague
From Prague to Warsaw: After breakfast at our hotel, we depart for Poland. We’ll transfer to the airport and fly to Warsaw (flight not included). We’ll transfer to our hotel and look forward to meeting new faces and exploring the Jewish Heritage of Poland together. (B)
